Q: How do you manage meals for overnight trips?
- When we are traveling we typically have breakfast included where we are staying or bring in groceries for the campers. Of the other two meals, one is covered by the camp and one is covered by the camper. For instance, they may be given a choice of places to buy their lunch and for dinner, we sit down for a group meal at a restaurant. In summary, we provide breakfast and one additional meal and the camper pays for the third meal which is usually lunch.
Q: Do the kids need to bring lunch or money?
- Sometimes buying lunch is half the fun for kids, but if a camper is a picky eater or has severe allergies they can choose to pack a lunch. It is always a good idea to pack a small healthy snack for the bus ride or hike. We also provide snacks on the bus.

- Our senior staff is made up of a number of certified Renaissance teachers. Our younger counselors and CITs have been hand picked and have proven themselves to be trustworthy and fun. See staff bios at https://www.surfandturfcamp.net/staff.html
Q: How does the camp manage Junior Campers?
- Junior campers are put together as a group and sit near the front of the bus close to adult counselors or depending in the week, they may ride on a separate junior van. Their schedule MAY be changed slightly, but while they will experience everything as a regular camper, they have more supervision at times when older campers have “free time,” such as during lunch. Juniors are never without a counselor or CIT (Counselor in Training). They may be left to eat with a large group though to avoid embarrassment.
Q: How can my child become a CIT (Counselor in Training)?
- At the age of 16, a person can apply to become a CIT via an e-mail to John at surfandturfmontclair@gmail.com Not everyone can become a CIT.
